How Generative AI is Putting Schaeffler’s Software Testing on the Fast Track

In the fast-evolving world of automotive technology, where electrification, autonomous driving, and software-defined vehicles (SDVs) are reshaping the industry, Schaeffler—a global leader in motion technology—is accelerating innovation through generative AI. In partnership with AWS, Schaeffler is transforming its software testing workflows, dramatically reducing time and effort while enhancing quality and precision.

The Challenge: Complexity in Automotive Software Testing

Modern vehicles are powered by millions of lines of code and thousands of system requirements. Testing these systems is a monumental task. For example, validating 837 system requirements traditionally took Schaeffler engineers around 820 hours—a staggering 1.02 hours per test case. Multiply that by the scale of SDVs, and the effort balloons to over 100,000 hours.

Test engineers face challenges such as:

  • Unstructured and unreadable requirement formats
  • Manual test case generation prone to human error
  • Difficulty mapping test cases back to requirements
  • Compliance with rigorous standards like ISO 29148 and ISO 29119

The Solution: Virtual Engineering Workbench (VEW) + Generative AI

Schaeffler’s answer lies in the Virtual Engineering Workbench (VEW), a framework powered by AWS services and generative AI. This platform automates and streamlines the entire test case generation process—from requirement analysis to final test scripts.

Key Use Cases of Generative AI in VEW:

  1. Requirement Translation & Explanation: AI interprets complex, text-heavy requirements into human-readable formats.
  2. Coding Assistance: Embedded developers receive AI-powered support for writing and reviewing code.
  3. Automated Test Case Generation: AI creates detailed test cases based on structured requirements.
  4. Intelligent Process Guidance: AI connects development steps, offering a holistic view of the testing workflow.

How It Works

Schaeffler and AWS built a generative AI gateway using Amazon Bedrock and LiteLLM, allowing secure access to multiple large language models (LLMs). The VEW platform:

  • Converts Excel-based inputs to JSON
  • Uses REST APIs to interact with AI models
  • Stores session data in Amazon S3 and metadata in DynamoDB
  • Publishes events via Amazon EventBridge
  • Enables collaborative, stateful test generation sessions

This structured approach ensures traceability, reduces errors, and allows engineers to pause and resume sessions seamlessly.

The Impact: Speed, Accuracy, and Efficiency

The results are game-changing:

  • Test case generation time reduced by 60%
  • Engineers now spend 265 hours instead of 820 for the same workload
  • Human error is minimized through structured AI assistance
  • Requirements are validated more reliably

What’s Next?

Schaeffler and AWS plan to integrate VEW with Schaeffler’s testing software to automate requirement exports and test case imports. The vision includes a Generative AI Test Cockpit—a comprehensive assistant guiding engineers through every testing phase.
